Description

Blackpool and Fleetwood Yacht Club enjoys a magnificent location, situated on the banks of the River Wyre in the midst of an area designated of special scientific interest. The waters are ideal for sailing dinghies, with easy access to the open sea for larger yachts. The footpath, Wyre Way, passes through the club property. There are no restrictions on what classes can be sailed, typically the dinghy fleet consists of RS 400s, RS 200s, Merlin Rockets, Phantoms, GP14s, Lasers and Toppers.

The dinghy fleet is split into a fast handicap fleets (for boats of PN1178 or less) and a slow handicap fleet. Racing takes place year round. Keel boats and offshore yachts also race year round. Racing from September to March takes place in the River Wyre estuary between Skippool and Fleetwood. In the summer months, racing takes place in Morecambe Bay for suitably equipped yachts. The offshore fleet includes a growing number of quarter tonners, although any yacht can race, with handicaps are allocated by the offshore committee. The club also has a strong and active Soling fleet.

The Rossendale Valley Sailing Club has been in existence since 1968. Its location at Clowbridge Reservoir near Burnley, high up on the East Lancashire Moors, provides an excellent sailing location. The 90 acre lake situated at a height of over 700ft above sea level provides a first class high wind venue.

The club was originally constituted as a dinghy club, supporting fleets of enterprise, laser and fireball dinghies. Following the introduction of windsurfing in the early eighties it was quickly recognised as an ideal inland water to develop the sport. The popularity of windsurfing was embraced by the club and a strong windsurfing membership was established. Increasing club membership and the launch of the National Lottery provided the club with an opportunity to develop. An application to the Sport England Lottery fund was made in 1997.

The Dinghy Cruising Association was formed in 1955 to encourage all forms of small boat sailing other than racing. Members come from all walks of life, sharing the same love of messing around in simple, affordable boats. Some members have extensive sea passage experience in boats they have refined over several years, but many are simply inveterate potterers, who enjoy sailing out to an island, down the river, or across the estuary to a favourite picnic spot.

An important function of the DCA is to stimulate the development of dinghies designed for cruising, to recommend safety standards, to circulate information of interest to small boat sailors, and to share the experience of members. Numerous rallies and day cruises are held in the UK and occasionally abroad throughout the sailing season. The Association publishes a quarterly illustrated bulletin, written by members, which is composed of accounts of cruises, articles about boats and equipment that members have bought or built themselves. The Association's Technical Officer gives free advice to members. There is also an extensive library.
