Calhoun Yacht Club

Description

The Calhoun Yacht Club is located at the Northeast corner of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, MN. CYC has promoted Sailing in the City for more than 100 years and conducts races for 4 types of sailboats - C Scows, 420's, Lasers and Optimists - several days a week, from May through September.

Fleets: C Scow C Scows make up the largest and most competitive fleet at Calhoun Yacht Club. These powerful 20-footers carry a skipper and crew, and sometimes a third (known in the trade as Rail Meat) in heavy air. Laser The Laser Class is the largest one-design class in the world. The Laser is a quick, responsive single-hander. The boat is lightweight, easy to rig and to trailer. Used Lasers can be had for under $2000. Club 420 Calhoun Yacht Club and the Lake Calhoun Sailing School began racing Club 420s in 2001.

The Club 420 is used in high school and college racing at schools throughout the US. Lake Calhoun Sailing School sponsors high school teams in the spring and fall. Optimist The Optimist Dinghy, or just Opti to insiders, provides a safe but challenging place for kids to learn to sail and race. Keelboats (PHRF) CYC has established a keelboat fleet for the first time in 2009.
